The lake was constructed in 1788 by Gulab Rai the beloved of Maharaja Vijay Singh, that’s where it took its name from. Originally it was built as a water storage replacing the old Bawri. It took around 8 years to complete the construction of Gulab Sagar. It measures 150 x 90m in size, receives water through a canal from Bal Samand Lake.

There are several places of interest near Gulab Sagar Lake; one amongst them is the Kunjebihari Temple which is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The place is quite peaceful and serene especially during the evenings with dim lit lights, water outpouring through fountains.
